Profile Valerie Ling

Valerie Ling, Registered Clinical Psychologist

BA (Hons) in Psychology, Masters of Clinical Psychology (Macquarie University)

I have 13 years of experience in the fields of psychology and pastoral care. I am a registered Clinical Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, and a member of the Australian Psychological Society. I am a registered provider under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Scheme enabling a Medicare rebate for clients, and an approved Worker's Compensation provider. I am also an accredited Myers-Briggs Type Indicator practitioner (Step 1 and 2), and a Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P) practitioner. I have received specialized training in child and adolescent anxiety from The Emotional Health Clinic (formerly known as Macquarie University Anxiety Research Unit).

The following areas are a few of the treatment situations that I work in:

My clinical work has seen me working with children, adolescents, and adults in various mental health settings. I have been involved with two tertiary hospitals in an Eating Disorders Unit, Trauma Unit, both inpatient and outpatient general psychiatry. I have been involved in adolescent health services, helping at risk youth with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties, and helping families understand one another. The range of mental health issues I have helped clients with include Mood Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Social Anxiety, Panic and Agoraphobia, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Eating Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Specific Phobias, Sleep Disorders, Sexual Paraphilia, Grief, work and relationship stress, and parenting issues.

Work History:

Having worked both in Australia and South East Asia, I have a particular sensitivity to the unique therpeutic needs in multicultural settings. If required, I am effectively bi-lingual in English and Bahasa Malaysia and/or Indonesia. Prior to my therpeutic work, I performed in the capacity of a Consultant in a global Human Resources Assessment and Development Organisation. I have found this to be an asset in helping my clients who often have work stress and career adjustment issues. With this background, I am able to continue a therapeutic relationship with my clients long after their mental health issues are resolved to promote wellness and encourage continued personal growth. My greatest joy is journeying with my clients, dreaming with them for a brighter tomorrow, and cheering them on as they grow in the freedom of mind and spirit. As a practitioner, I am committed to evidence based practices.
