Profile Ian Cameron Dr Ian Cameron BA (Psychology), Grad Dip (Counselling), PhD. MAPS. I am a Consultant Psychologist and I have worked as a psychologist for 15 years in a range of clinical settings including private practice, the Department of Health, and St John of God Hospital. I work with a diverse range of individuals including emergency services personnel, refugees and asylum seekers. I utilise a range of approaches in my work including cognitive behavioural therapy and desensitisation, psychodynamic, existentialistic and Rogerian approaches. I am particularly interested in the area of personality and trauma, and how people can recover their ‘sense of self’ and find new meaning for life after trauma. My PhD research focussed on hope, and I examined how individuals who had sustained severe interpersonal traumas were able to adapt and survive in the harshest of circumstances. I bring this knowledge base to my clinical work, where I endeavour to treat both the person and their symptoms, and work with each individual using a strengths-based approach. I work mostly in the following areas: anxiety and depression, childhood trauma, grief and loss, sexual abuse, post traumatic stress disorder, torture and trauma, the development of identity and self, anxiety and phobias, adjustment to change, personality disorders, adolescent issues, self esteem issues, sleep difficulties, and chronic pain. Referrals: I am a Member of the Australian Psychological Society, an accredited Workcover Provider, and a registered Medicare provider. Medicare rebates are available provided that you are referred by your GP, your psychiatrist or paediatrician. Your GP will need to complete a detailed mental health assessment and prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan before referring you. You should book a longer session with your GP to enable time for this. If you are seeking treatment under the NSW Workcover System you must be referred for counselling by your treating doctor or treating psychiatrist and your insurer must approve the referral prior to the commencement of counselling. |
